This is an original 11×17 pencilled cover to Raw Media Quarterly #2 by Tim Vigil. This was to have originally been slated for his Dark Utopia series from 1997, but repurposed for Raw Media Quarterly a year later in 1998. The interesting thing is that the inks are not credited on RWQ on the cover or inside the book. They are also near exact as this pencilled piece. When looking at the final cover, it’s also interesting to note that it has heavy digital coloring work that may indicate it could have been digital inks (I have another penciled cover of the era that went to production with digital inks). The majority of the woman’s figure is in pencil, while the tiger is mostly xeroxed. It’s done on bond paper, and there are remnants of enlargement images on the backside, along with magic tape piecing things together as he worked the scale out in relationship to the final artwork. PLEASE NOTE: This artwork is NOT done on comic board. Trying to contact people involved with Avatar Press 25 years ago is daunting but Johnny B and Mia Hopper have graciously responded with their comments helping me to figure out what this was, but I also had never heard back from Tim Tyler or Tim Vigil – but it does seem that the story likely ends here, and my conclusion is that the art was submitted as pencils and finished digitally for the issue. This happened often in this era, so I’m fairly confident with my research. Balls if you would like to chat up about original art! Feedback Policy: I strive for 100% satisfaction with all of my listings. Ll do the same.
