ORIGINAL ART – PLANNED MAGAZINE COVER ILLUSTRATION. “Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine”. This is a finished “comprehensive” artwork produced for F&SF magazine, created some time in the 1970s, and not used. Interestingly, Hinge never got work from that magazine so I’m thinking he produced it for their consideration and submitted it – but they never ended up hiring him. Note: he was working for Amazing and Fantastic magazines throughout this decade. A “Comp” is the page layout of a proposed design as initially presented by the designer to a client, showing the relative positions of text and illustrations before the final content of those elements has been decided upon – so in this case, the title of the magazine and positioning of that has been mounted to the artwork (paste-up). Hinge wanted to show the art director a draft of the final layout, as a guide for further design changes and, ultimately, the final art. It’s a great piece, fully in his style, matted and framed. This is the only photo I have, so I’m estimating the artwork dimensions based on previous experience with Hinge’s work, as approx 20″ x 16″ and add to that for the matte and frame. NOTE: No rights of reproduction accompany the sale. For other choices in illustration art you can also visit the Worlds of Wonder website and browse our online gallery of illustrative art!
