The RARE ORIGINAL PAINTING For This Iconic Comic Cover! Original COVER COLOR GUIDE, The Hand Painted Artwork For The Front Cover with the Received Date (in 1978) written by hand on the reverse, along with the Due Date. As if to confirm what an essential step of the creative process this was, the “Rest In Peace Daredevil” is written BY HAND on the tombstone! And although it states Still Only 35c! At upper left, by the time the comic actually went to press, the powers that be had unfortunately raised the price to forty cents. Also, on the published comics, the issue number and month are at the top left corner, not the top right as seen on this unique masterpiece! This looks so incredible, with the haunting bad guy pouncing down in his blue cape, I like. Version much better than the mass-produced depiction with the dreaded Death-Stalker wearing all purple instead. Legendary Cover, For An Industry Changing Moment In The Hobby, Courtesy Of The Respected Talent FRANK MILLER, From His Peak Period. Look at the amazing color variations and attention to detail on the painted cemetary gravestones, for example, all simply breathtaking paint work, all applied carefully by hand. CLASSIC COVER PRODUCTION ART, FOR A COVER BY ONE OF THE MOST RENOWNED COVER ARTISTS OF THE ERA! It’s a masterpiece: Landmark Supernatural-Superhero Comic Cover-Art from the famous long-running series that began in 1964. THIS HAS BEEN A MAJOR BRONZE KEY FOR MANY YEARS, AS IT WAS THE FIRST ISSUE BY FRANK MILLER, AND MILLER WOULD GO ON TO BE ONE OF THE MOST RENOWNED AND INFLUENTIAL CREATORS TO EVER WORK ON THIS BELOVED TITLE, –INCLUDING TEN ISSUES LATER WHEN HE INTRODUCED ELEKTRA! Good luck finding similar color guides to other seventies key comic covers, as they almost never change hands! The Actual Hand Painted Piece Was Used By Marvel Comics In 1978. It became the front cover to a well-known issue that commenced a rather new direction for the fabled title! One of the more foreboding covers of the day, it’s a jaw-dropper, with the Man Without Fear apparently getting caught off guard in a graveyard, as the spooky Phantom-like villain, perhaps an insidious version of the Spirit or the Shadow, attacks him from behind. Later we’d learn this ominous bad-guy was the aptly-named Death Stalker, as this book contained his origin and death, but when most fans saw this cover on the stand, we just knew he had to be bad news for ole Matt Murdock! Truly incredible Eye-appeal: high-quality paper was used. Any admirer of the timeless lines of the skilled Frank Miller would happily add this showpiece to his or her comic art collection. This lot is a must-have piece of comics history for any fan of vintage hero comic-books and/or unique DD ephemera, or of original production art to Silver-Bronze Marvel comics, or just the serious art fan who likes having true rarities instead of the mass-produced’collectibles’ of the last forty years. Many of you dealt with us during the pre-bay era via our many ads in C. We are secure packagers and prompt shippers so expect to be pleased. Back in the “good ole days”, the publishers normally burned or discarded such production art once the comic went to print. Fortunately, somebody shrewd had the foresight to stash aside this piece of Marvel history for posterity, to serve as both an artistic showpiece and historical document. This is the actual Original Cover Painting for the cult-classic comic. It is about a half-inch taller than a comic, and also slightly wider. Up close, one can actually admire the brushstrokes and varying hues, which never made it to the blander printed version that is beloved by fans for decades. The editorial and creative staff reviewed it and approved it for use, to make sure there were no errors or needed improvements, before the actual book hit the press. This one was obviously appreciated since day one, as somebody took very good care of it! Gorgeous showpiece is obviously well preserved, and in stellar condition. During the numerous years it’s been a part of my personal comic-art collection, it’s been safely preserved in archival mylar. Color Guides are slightly larger than comic size; since they were part of the editorial process they can include tack-holes, white-out, indentations from a paper clip, staple-holes, chips, pencil notations, tape, and/or edge wear. This is a great looking showpiece, which would be especially impressive framed. All colors are rich and uniform, and extremely bold thoughout! As Usual: LOW ASKING PRICE AND NO RESERVE!
