ORIGINAL ART – MAGAZINE ILLUSTRATION. “Inside front cover and T of C”. This is a rare opportunity to own the original artwork for the inside front cover (page 2) and “paste-up” sheet for the Table of Contents for Cosmos Science Fiction Magazine issue for September 1977 (Vol 1, #3) Both are covered with tracing paper overlays which I show in the photos and then lift off so you can see the art. Back in the day, that was how magazines were printed: scans were made of identical sized sheets of heavy paper 13.5″ x 19″ (a size calculated to yield – after printing – double page sheets to trim and bind into a magazine of 11″ x 8.5″ size) to which the text and art was “pasted” (glued) down. Here, we have original artwork in black-and-white that when published with an overlay became the colorful image you see in the photo of the magazine… This was a very common practice of publishers who wanted to publish art without the much higher costs of a four color scan process. I show the magazine inside cover as it was published for your reference. Gaughan was the Art Director of the magazine and contributed many images to the issues, and of course came up with the concepts…. This is a unique piece of science fiction literary history, from a publication period never to be seen again, and rarely seen or available for sale. NOTE: No rights of reproduction accompany the sale. For other choices in illustration art you can also visit the Worlds of Wonder website and browse our online gallery of illustrative art!
