DANGER TRAIL MAGAZINE 1920's ORIGINAL COVER ART by CHARLES LEWIS WRENN
We are offering a RARE Original Oil on Canvas Painting by Charles Lewis Wrenn (1880/1952). This painting is the original artwork for a cover of the magazine The Danger Trail. The painting was professionally cleaned and shows beautifully! Painting measures 19″ x 27″. Frame size is 24″ x 31″. He also studied art in France, Spain, Egypt and Morocco. He and his wife lived in New York City for many years where he had his studio. During his time in New York, aside from illustrating many books, he also drew illustrations for stories in magazines such as Redbook and drew cover illustrations for Pulp Magazines. In the 1920’s and early 30’s, he drew covers for The Danger Trail, People’s Magazine, and Ranch Romances. After moving to Wilson Point, Norwalk, Connecticut in 1936 he began painting portraits and landscapes. The painting depicts a prisoner being transported by a government official, possibly a cavalryman or a law enforcement officer, who holds a rope that is tied around the prisoner’s waist as he leads him through the western desert. Judging from the subject matter, we believe it is likely this painting was the artwork for a cover of The Danger Trail magazine. From what we know, Wrenn’s other paintings were of landscapes and portraits. And, also, the other magazines for which he painted covers would not exactly fit with this type of painting. Because of the rarity of existing copies of The Danger Trail Magazine, we were not able to locate this cover in our research, but, again, because of the subject matter we believe it was most likely painted for the cover of this magazine.
